The PLEDGE on Food Waste proudly announces the certification of Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin as the first hotel in China to achieve Gold Level recognition, scoring an impressive 93%. This milestone sets a new benchmark for sustainability in the hospitality industry, emphasizing the critical role of food waste prevention in creating a more responsible and sustainable future.
The Certification Journey: Goals into Gold
Beginning in April 2024, the hotel embarked on a transformative journey toward certification, guided by the rigorous standards of The PLEDGE on Food Waste’s seven-pillar framework and 95 actionable criteria. Over six months, Hyatt Regency Hong Kong Sha Tin, collaborating with LightBlue Consulting, developed and implemented strategies, such as,
- Comprehensive food waste monitoring (FIT) and tracking systems.
- Action plans with measurable goals to reduce food waste across all operations.
- Teamwide training to empower staff with the tools and knowledge to sustain long-term change.
The process culminated in September 2024, earning the hotel its place as a trailblazer in sustainable hospitality.
A Legacy of Dedication: Inspiring achievement from 2023
Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin’s commitment to reducing food waste didn’t start this year. In 2023, the hotel achieved a remarkable 34% reduction in food waste per cover across three outlets, donated 400kg of surplus food to Foodlink, and implemented innovative solutions like converting leftovers into energy.
These earlier successes inspired their 2024 journey, demonstrating how consistent effort and alignment with sustainability goals lead to transformational outcomes.
